Coward of the County & GORP

GeoCaches released in Taliaferro County

The eight and ninth geocaches in the Taliaferro County Historical Society’s Movies Mania Geocache Series were just released.  The Coward of the County geocache was created by Charles Greene.  The GORP geocache was created by Robert H Kendrick.

The movie Coward of the County was made in 1981.  In Coward of the County, a teenage pacifist must deal with life at home during World War II.  Tommy played by Fredric Lehne, made a deathbed promise to his father who went to prison, for killing a man in a fight, to refrain from striking anyone.  Now Tommy must deal with his neighbors going off to war and worse yet the gang rape of his wife to be.   Tommy’s Uncle is played by kenny Rogers.

The location of the Coward of the County geocache is neither historical or directly related to the movie.  But, like Kenny Rogers at the time of the movie is a relative unknown location.  This movie became a launching point for Kenny Rogers popularity at the time.  Kenny plays Uncle Matthew, a preacher, who has his faults.   As a person who admits to past mistakes, learns from them, and then passes on these lessons, this comes close to Mr Rogers real personality.  This is a family movie about growing up with principles.. There is much to enjoy in the movie, the characters are well developed, and include the following Taliaferro County residents;  Sam, Lois, Charles, Sandra, Jon, Mary Jane and marcus Greene, Joy Wood, Chad Brown, Kathleen Mitchell, George Jackson, Bill Specth, Robert Morris, James and Melanie Finney and Bill Fouche.

The movie GORP was made in 1979 and released in May of 1980.   GORP is a relatively silly movie about about kids in summer camp. It is set in a Catskills style plush resort for wealthy Jewish kids… except it was all filmed in Alexandria Stevens State Park in Crawfordville, GA.   A significant number of Taliaferro County residents had the opportunity to participate in the making of GORP the movie including;  Vivian Harford, Carolyn Moore, Sam and Louis Greene, and Troy Taylor.  Also from surrounding Wilkes counties Pete and Mary Ruth Chafin and Myra Chafin along with Billy Harper from Warrenton.  The GORP geocache is located in Alexandria Stevens State Park.  The creator of the GORP geocache was a lifeguard at the park in his youth and remembers 200 folks swimming in the lake on Sundays.  NO swimming require to find this cache.  It is easily accessible. But, hard to find.

The Taliaferro County Movie Mania Caches contain Key ID Tags depicting the movie poster.  There are now nine Movie Mania Geocaches in Taliaferro County.  Soon to be thirteen.  A H Stevens Park also has other geocaches caches located around the park, including one that is a part of the Georgia Parks Geo-Challange. The Geo-Challange is one of the biggest treasure hunts in the state of Georgia.
