Holiday GeoCaching in Taliaferro County

Home Fires Burning

The Tenth Geocache in the Taliaferro County Historical Society’s Movies Made in Crawfordville Geocache Series was created by Joe Martin and placed online 12-5-2010. The GeoCache movie location is located in Golucke Park in Downtown Crawfordville. This Cache represents a made for TV movie, “Home Fires Burning”, that was filmed in Crawfordville in 1989.   The date 1944, a tiny Georgia town, the story of newspaper man Jake Tibbetts (Barnard Hughes), who’s alienated almost everyone in his life — including his wife, grandson and even his closest friend — with his irritable ways. Jake’s son Henry (Bill Pullman) is fighting for his country in Europe, but even across oceans, the relationship between father and son is strained.

Many residents were in the cast.   A number of sequences take place inside the building now housing the Crawfordville municipal complex on Broad Street.  In the opening sequence a WWII bi-plane is seen flying over Taliaferro County.  As the movie begins the residents of the town are surprised as the aircraft makes a low level pass directly down Broad Street.

Golucke Park is where the production cameras were located when the aircraft scene in “Home Fires Burning” was shot.  The Park is named for a prominent Taliaferro County family that still maintains a home on Commerce Street.  Mary Gordon Golucke was a 4th grade teacher at Alexandria Stevens Institute for many years.  A movie theater was located on the site of the park.  Some residents still recall walking to the movies downtown on Saturday afternoons.  Today a small pavilion is located in the park.  From this location one can visualize the opening scene of the movie.  Zoommmmm.  Or find a modern geocaching treasure.

The First to Find the “Home Fires Burning” Movie Mania Geocache was logged at 8:00 PM 12-5—2010 by the Flying Eagles from Woodville, GA.  Here is what they had to say:  Great hide. Thanks for another fun hide in the Movie series and also thanks for bringing us to Crawfordville while all the Christmas lights were lit up . You could even hear Christmas music playing from across the street at one of the nearby stores . Took a key chain, Thanks for the FTF and TFTC , Flying Eagles
