The Tenth Geocache in the Taliaferro County Historical Society’s Movies Made in Crawfordville Geocache Series was created by Joe Martin and placed online 12-5-2010. The GeoCache movie location is located in Golucke Park in Downtown Crawfordville. This Cache represents a made for TV movie, “Home Fires Burning”, that was filmed in Crawfordville in 1989. The date 1944, a tiny Georgia town, the story of newspaper man Jake Tibbetts (Barnard Hughes), who’s alienated almost everyone in his life — including his wife, grandson and even his closest friend — with his irritable ways. Jake’s son Henry (Bill Pullman) is fighting for his country in Europe, but even across oceans, the relationship between father and son is strained.
Many residents were in the cast. A number of sequences take place inside the building now housing the Crawfordville municipal complex on Broad Street. In the opening sequence a WWII bi-plane is seen flying over Taliaferro County. As the movie begins the residents of the town are surprised as the aircraft makes a low level pass directly down Broad Street.
Golucke Park is where the production cameras were located when the aircraft scene in “Home Fires Burning” was shot. The Park is named for a prominent Taliaferro County family that still maintains a home on Commerce Street. Mary Gordon Golucke was a 4th grade teacher at Alexandria Stevens Institute for many years. A movie theater was located on the site of the park. Some residents still recall walking to the movies downtown on Saturday afternoons. Today a small pavilion is located in the park. From this location one can visualize the opening scene of the movie. Zoommmmm. Or find a modern geocaching treasure.
The First to Find the “Home Fires Burning” Movie Mania Geocache was logged at 8:00 PM 12-5—2010 by the Flying Eagles from Woodville, GA. Here is what they had to say: Great hide. Thanks for another fun hide in the Movie series and also thanks for bringing us to Crawfordville while all the Christmas lights were lit up . You could even hear Christmas music playing from across the street at one of the nearby stores . Took a key chain, Thanks for the FTF and TFTC , Flying Eagles

The eleventh Geocache in the Taliaferro County Historical Society’s Movie Mania Geocache Series was created by John Allen and placed online Sunday evening 1/9/2011. This one was really a quest to find since it started snowing in Crawfordville shortly after being activated online. Of course the Flying Eagles from Woodville, GA were not to be denied the honor to be “First to Find”, despite the hazardous weather conditions, they did it again. Here is what they say in their log “We got up Monday morning and found out neither one of us had to go to work , but it was still pouring down snow , and we were a little scared to drive this far for a cache . Tuesday we had to go to work , but when we got home , the roads were already freezing back , so we were still kind of scared to make the trip . Now here it is Wednesday , we get home from work , the roads are already freezing back again . We checked the cache page and no one had log this cache yet. We couldn’t take it any longer, as all you Geocachers understand this feeling. We jumped in the truck and drove about 40 miles round trip at 20 miles per hour. When we got to the cache location. the refrozen ice on top of the snow had gotten real hard by this time . This is a hint that will last only as long as the snow does. As we got about three feet from the cache location , I quit worrying about my footing quite as much in all the excitement of finding a new cache. There is an imprint of a 200 pound, six foot, four inch man , right in front of where the cache is.”
This cache is another Taliaferro County Historical Society Movie Mania cache done by Mr Allen. He is consistently picking old historical churches to hide the treasures. The cache is located near the United Methodist Church in Sandy Cross. The church was built in 1891. While not in use today the building is still representative of the many small community churches in the countryside.
The cache represents the made for TV movie, “Quest for Justice” starring Jane Seymour. It is the story of Hazel Brannon Smith, a Southern newspaper editor and publisher who risked the loss of everything she loved by publishing her perspective of intergration with a steadfast adherence to her editorial duties in the face of great pressure and opposition from segregationists. Ms Smith was, the first American woman awarded the Pulitzer Prize for editorial writing. At the time she was the editor of the Lexington Advertiser, a Mississippi newspaper that addressed in print the racism in the South. For her activism, Hazel is initially put out of business then, she is asked to produce the alternative newspaper the Mississippi Free Press. Mrs. Hazel Brannon Smith first printed the Mississippi Free Press on her printing press in Lexington, Mississippi. The paper’s audience was primarily African American; however, the Mississippi Free Press claimed it was for all Americans who believed in, “freedom of speech, worship, movement, and freedom from intimidation”.
The Taliaferro County Historical Society has created Geocaches for each of the twelve Movies made in Taliaferro County. Found today with R-Photo on an all day caching trip from Augusta to Dublin, Milledgeville, Gibson, Thomson and other points in between! Had a great day! I have been saving this cache for a “special” occasion. Had it solved a while back (with “a little help from my friends”) and made the find today! My 5,000th find and so a salute to two super cachers, Rhonda and Amy who, along with Ro and Thomas (Oddangles) made me feel so welcome at my first Geocacher’s meeting. Unfortunately, I didn’t make the TTH that year but made the following one and hope to see these fun weekend events return soon! Thanks ladies for a very interesting and historical puzzle hide! One more thing…..enjoyed reviewing the log and seeing all of the great CSRA cachers who had made the find before me. Quite impressive! Thanks again for the milestone and the memories! SL…………..Hoots!
We started out not too early for the flight to the west coast. We did get to the airport and start the process of checking in. This is the first bag that hit the scale. That was the TB bag that we took. We only have 50 lbs to play with and, as you can see, we just about hit it. That was the look that I got from Richard right after the bag was weighed. Well we headed down to the gates, and, as most of you know, you can walk to the difference concourses. Well we couldn’t pass up the opportunity of taking a video.
I thought I saw a TB on the door of the plane as we were getting on-board. But I must have been seeing things.
Our flight was about 5 hours, I had downloaded some movies on my touch, but the battery died at the end of the first one. Oh well. Then I got on-board again and started taking pictures again. Cool video screen on the the back of the seats. Gave us a lot of information. Kinda makes you wonder, I guess. Funny huh??? Well we finally landed and we were so happy to get things started. You get off the plane and you hurry up to wait, again!!! Do they have those thing everywhere? I’ve seen them, surprised they didn’t have a brochure for Six Flags. IN ATLANTA!!! Sorry, had to get that one. SWEET!!!!!! When we got down to pick up our SUV, we couldn’t believe what we were given. .. It was going to be a great trip!! As we left the airport, we knew we were in the right city. ..
We got to this event late, but we didn’t stay long either. I wasn’t feeling the best so we went and got a few caches in the area.
Our next cache had a really cool caboose at the start of the trail. Richard ran for the cache, I took pictures and videos.
This one seemed to have a little store inside it. It was really neat. It was closed by the time I had gotten there.
All in all, we found about 15 caches that first day…. 13 traditionals, 1 virtual, and 1 event cache. Check out all the pictures that we took and an extra video that i did at a cache that we had a hard time finding.
Until next time, this is the end of page 3. Stay tuned for the next one.
We left this morning and headed for Atlanta. We wanted to stop and get a few caches on the way just for the fun of it. I mean hey, that’s what it is all about right?
Our first stop wasA. H. Stephens State Historic Park. Neither one of us had gotten this state park so we thought it would be a good one for our first of many. As I was getting things ready for the hunt, Richard ran off into the woods for the cache. Go figure.
This is the intro to the park cache.
Me running after Richard
Enjoy!!!
We then headed off to DaFast & DaFurious. It was a cool looking place. It had a small dirt track for BMX bikes. It look very well maintained.
I even got on it and took some video. You know me, I couldn’t resist.
We then headed off to War Stories. This is one of those prime examples of Geocaching taking you to great places. There was a great deal to see and do. There were people on the playground, picnic area and a big building for things to do. It’s looks like a great place for having some events.
It was a great place for a cache, this was the first part that we came to, then went to the really cool part.
Richard did make the find. But you see the flags in the back.
After we found the cache, we went and looked at the War Memorial that was on the grounds.
It was really a neat place. Great place to honor those who have protected what we enjoy doing.
We left this great place and headed north towards Atlanta, because by this time, we had traveled south, instead of west. Oh well, that is Geocaching for you.
We did get this great shot of the huge flag that has been on I-75 for as long as I can remember.
But before heading to the hotel, we stopped for just one more cache.
As you can see we are very mess packers. Richard is trying to plan out each days cache run, yet we found that everything that he planed for, we’d change in the end.
The table is all amiss because of having to clean our caching back for the trip. I needed as much space a possible for the TB that we were going to take with us.
When we first started out, the TB bag was 55lbs. I looked up the price for UPS and found that the back was going to cost $60 one way to ship. After calling the airline, it was only going to be $32 to fly with us. But, all we could think about was how TSA was going to feel about the TB’s. We only hoped that they had seen worse things.
This was my bag. Richards was way bigger and weighed less than mine. I don’t know how he did it. I even had to repack some of my stuff into his bag for the flight.
This was the TB bag that was 55 lbs. Richard and I were going to take all of our coins to GW8 just in case we wanted to show off something. Well we had to ditch that and go with just what we needed. But even after doing that, I still added to much back to the bag and had to still readjust things for the flight.
Saddy even wanted to get weighted for the trip. She loves to climb on things, even if she doesn’t always fit on top of them.
For some reason, Richard didn’t think this was a good idea for packing some of the TB’s. Although I can’t think why.
Here is a video of us packing for the trip. I had never used my mom’s camera for video, so I didn’t know if it even had audio. Man I sure was surprised.
I couldn’t resist videoing Saddy. She like to climb and sit on just about anything.
Here are all the pictures that we took that first day. Enjoy.
There is more to come as time goes on. Work is never a good thing. Although it does allow me to do things like GWVIII and hopefully GWIX.
I have about 600 pictures and videos to share with you all from our trip to GW8. I’m sorry I haven’t gotten all the stories written down and picture captions done for you all. Just hang in there.
When we left for GW8, all work here at the other business came to a halt, and I have been playing catchup ever since. Even the second job has called me in a few days, and that put me even more behind. In fact, as I am typing this, the Monday night group is feeding on Mexican, and I hope to get to the after party at McD’s.
But, thank you for sticking with me. I will get them up sometime. We had a great time and want to share with everyone.
Sorry that thing didn’t get changed yesterday. We have taken lots of pictures and videos, but when we got in last night, the jet lag had caught up with us. We went straight to bed.
But, I am offloading pictures right now and they will be uploaded tonight.
As of right now, we have found about 30 or so caches. We have been going after quality, not quantity caches. We have been trying to get virtual, earth, and webcam caches because we don’t have many of them in our area.
We are also on our way to Spokane, Washington to see how many caches we can get before we have to run back to go to the Luau and to pick up my buddy from the airport.
After the airport pickup, we are not sure if we are going caching or finding something else to do until GW8 starts in the morning.
Thanks for following us on our trip to GW8 and look for more pictures and video’s in the morning.
