Coward of the County & GORP
GeoCaches released in Taliaferro County
The eight and ninth geocaches in the Taliaferro County Historical Society’s Movies Mania Geocache Series were just released. The Coward of the County geocache was created by Charles Greene. The GORP geocache was created by Robert H Kendrick.
The movie Coward of the County was made in 1981. In Coward of the County, a teenage pacifist must deal with life at home during World War II. Tommy played by Fredric Lehne, made a deathbed promise to his father who went to prison, for killing a man in a fight, to refrain from striking anyone. Now Tommy must deal with his neighbors going off to war and worse yet the gang rape of his wife to be. Tommy’s Uncle is played by kenny Rogers.
The location of the Coward of the County geocache is neither historical or directly related to the movie. But, like Kenny Rogers at the time of the movie is a relative unknown location. This movie became a launching point for Kenny Rogers popularity at the time. Kenny plays Uncle Matthew, a preacher, who has his faults. As a person who admits to past mistakes, learns from them, and then passes on these lessons, this comes close to Mr Rogers real personality. This is a family movie about growing up with principles.. There is much to enjoy in the movie, the characters are well developed, and include the following Taliaferro County residents; Sam, Lois, Charles, Sandra, Jon, Mary Jane and marcus Greene, Joy Wood, Chad Brown, Kathleen Mitchell, George Jackson, Bill Specth, Robert Morris, James and Melanie Finney and Bill Fouche.
The movie GORP was made in 1979 and released in May of 1980. GORP is a relatively silly movie about about kids in summer camp. It is set in a Catskills style plush resort for wealthy Jewish kids… except it was all filmed in Alexandria Stevens State Park in Crawfordville, GA. A significant number of Taliaferro County residents had the opportunity to participate in the making of GORP the movie including; Vivian Harford, Carolyn Moore, Sam and Louis Greene, and Troy Taylor. Also from surrounding Wilkes counties Pete and Mary Ruth Chafin and Myra Chafin along with Billy Harper from Warrenton. The GORP geocache is located in Alexandria Stevens State Park. The creator of the GORP geocache was a lifeguard at the park in his youth and remembers 200 folks swimming in the lake on Sundays. NO swimming require to find this cache. It is easily accessible. But, hard to find.
The Taliaferro County Movie Mania Caches contain Key ID Tags depicting the movie poster. There are now nine Movie Mania Geocaches in Taliaferro County. Soon to be thirteen. A H Stevens Park also has other geocaches caches located around the park, including one that is a part of the Georgia Parks Geo-Challange. The Geo-Challange is one of the biggest treasure hunts in the state of Georgia.
Would you like to try your hand at geocaching, just go to www.geocaching.com.

| Jennings Baptist Church is the location for the latest Taliaferro County Historical Society Movie Mania Geocache titled Neon Bible. The movie Neon Bible is a 1994 movie made in Crawfordville. The Neon Bible Geocache was created by John Allen and placed online on Sunday October 17, 2010 at 7:30 PM. One of the big rewards for Geocachers is being First to Find. Immediately after a new Geocache is posted the location is e-mailed and texted to Geocachers in the surrounding area. Mr Allen was in his living room at 8:00 PM when he noticed flashlights flickering around the Church. Within minutes there were two cars in the parking lot and four flashlights on the hunt for the Neon Bible Geocache.
Jennings Baptist Church is one of the oldest Baptist churches in Georgia still in operation today. The current church building was built on land donated in 1894 by the Hadaway family and started out with 45 members. Jennings Church was build on two acres of land that was purchased for the sum of $10. The men of the church donated the labor and built the church themselves. The Reverend L.R.L. Jennings, a Confederate Army veteran, was the first Pastor. The church pews were made in 1924. The Jennings church always lacked indoor toilet facilities. Cohen Wright, a member and Babe Reese, a local carpenter, built an outdoor “Privy” that is still used by passing motorists and the members today. Until recently, baptismal services were held across from the Church in Jennings Creek. The main structure of the church stands today. A magnificent steeple was added to the existing structure in 2000. Jennings Baptist Church is lit at night. Many people stop and take pictures of the building to capture the past and present beauty. The Church building has itself “starred” in a number of movies as a “picture perfect” country church”. The Church is still active today with 32 members.
Neon Bible, the movie, harkens back to a harsh time by reflecting on dark thoughts of a young boy as he contemplates his life during the Great Depression. The 1994 movie takes place while the boy, David, is traveling on a train, thinking and remembering. Flash back fragments of memory reflect Davids life. The audience is left to flesh out the meaning of David’s thoughts. This was one of the darkest of times for people and the movie provides a sense of how hard life was during the 1930’s. A number of Taliaferro County residents had the opportunity to be members of the cast including; John Allen, Sam and Louis Greene, and Myrtle Kendrick.
If you are interested in Geocaching, go to www.geocaching.com and search for the Neon Bible Geocache. Be sure to pick up a Neon Bible Key Chain to commemorate your visit. If you just want to go for a ride in the country, come on out to Jennings Church on Route 47 East of Crawfordville. Maybe you want to take some pictures of this picture perfect country church. In either case take some time to look at the grave markers in the little cemetery adjacent to the church. Some of the markers have outstanding engravings symbolizing the lives of those church members who are gone now. |

As the big day comes closer and closer, I wanted to give all of you first crack at some items that I want to sell to get money for Christmas.
I want to upgrade my iPod Touch. Therefore I would like to offer my current iPod touch that I have for $200.00. It is a 32gig, 3rd generation itouch. Most all of you have seen me with it. I use it on a daily basis. There is nothing wrong with it, I just want to upgrade to the 4th generation. It comes with all of the original items that came with it. If you have any questions, please let me know.
The next item up for bids is my Garmin Nuvi 760. We have been using it for about 2 years now and we are wanting to upgrade to newer Garmin. There is nothing wrong with the GPS. I just replaced the battery so it will last a good time in or out of the woods. I am asking for $100 on this one.
If no one wants it, it’s off to that “e” place. But I would rather someone here have them.
Let me know if you are interested.

The Third Geocache in the Taliaferro County Historical Society’s Movies Made in Crawfordville Geocache Series was created by Charles Greene and placed online on 9-17-2010 at 4:59PM. The GeoCache movie location is a tribute to all those who have served in the Armed services. The Movie is Summer of My German Soldier. This Cache is located at the Taliaferro County American Legion and represents a made for TV movie that was filmed in Crawfordville in 1978. Summer of my German Soldier stars Kristy McNichol, as Patty Bergen a young girl in a very southern town with a World War II prisoner of war camp nearby. A young German soldier escapes the prison camp and Patty befriends him. Complicating matters, Patty is a teenager in a Jewish family living in the American South during World War II. Patty feels like an outcast even in her own family and is unable to understand why her father can’t seem to love her. After getting to know the German she ends up harboring him from his captors, and, in the way of many adolescents, falls in love with him. Patty knows what she is risking to help him, but in his company she feels important, special, and respected as she has never been. In the end, his regard lifts her self-esteem and helps her to face the heartbreaking events to come. A love story about a girl growing up. The movie was based on a book by Bette Greene of the same title. Summer of My German Soldier was filmed in and around Crawfordville. Many residents were in the cast including; Sam and Loise Greene, Charles Greene, India Mitchell, Bill Fouche, Paul Dye, Kathleen Mitchell, Chad Brown, Marcus Greene, Robert Morris, Bill Specht, Barbara Miller, Vivian Hallford, Carolyn Moore, Louise Greene and George Jackson. Charles, Greene’s 1941 Plymouth can be seen in a number of scenes in the movie. A number of sequences take place inside JP Ellington and Company a clothing store on Main Street, Crawfordville.
The First to Find was logged at 8:10 PM by Flying Eagles from Woodville, GA. Here is what they had to say: “We got off work at 5:00 and drove home and decided to see if any new caches had been published today. To our surprise, there was a new one only about 14 miles from home and had been published only an hour or so. We jumped in the car and headed that way. Got to the cache location and searched around for a bit . We walked right by it twice. Very unique hide. Thanks for another fun hide in this area. Flying Eagles”.
Geocaching is a worldwide game of hiding and seeking treasure. The Taliaferro County Historical Society is creating Geocaches for each of the Movies made in Taliaferro County. The first Movie Mania Geocache in the Taliaferro County Historical Society Movies Made in Crawfordville Series was “Get Low”. Anyone with a GPS unit can then try to locate the geocache. A GPS unit is an electronic device that can determine your approximate location (within around 6 – 20 feet) on the planet. Coordinates are normally given in Latitude and Longitude. You can use the device to navigate from your current location to another location. Some GPS devices have their own maps, built-in electronic compasses, and voice navigation. Are there rules for Geocaching? Yes. Basically; 1. If you take something from the cache, leave something of equal or greater value. 2. Write about your find in the cache logbook. 3. Log your experience online at www.geocaching.com. Each of the Taliaferro County Movie Caches contain Key ID Tags depicting the movie poster. Would you like to collect them all? Start now. SQRT and I had made up some new shirts and several of you showed an interest in owning one of your own. Well I have contanted a shirt maker and he is going to work with me on getting several differeny styles and options. I have to make a minum order of 50 shirts. But, I am able to custumize shirts before me make the final order. Check out the photos sections for the mock-ups of what we are offereing. That is where you will be the best idea of what they look like and how much they cost. Basic rundown of cost. Basic Shirt is $10.00 That gets you the shirts with large logo on back and small logo on front. No pocket, no long sleeve, and white only. $15.00 shirst is a bit different. That will get you the basic shirt and your choice of… Short or Long Sleeve Caching Name on back above large logo. Pocket On Front Name tag on front above pocket in blue, pink, or red. Or if you have the blinking tag, you can get this one too. Choice of basic color. White or Ash Gray or Gray. I have made a database to try and help with the ordering process. Please fill in each blank with info. If that field doesn’t apply to you, place put in “N/A” so I know you didn’t miss something. If you have any questions or need help filling in the database, please let me know. I would like to have all orders by 18th of September. No money is needed up front, I’ll nag you for that later.
The question was brought up not long ago about the new collection check box that is on the Travel Bugs. I have done a bit more research and have just listened to a pod cast that helped explain it a bit more. I also had to use a friend’s geocaching account to see what happens when different things are checked and moved around in and out of inventories. I will try to explain this the best I can. It has taken me a bit to try and understand this as well.
For the most part, you want to make your trackables “Non Collectable”. I wanted to say that up front just to let you know what you should do first. So, as you activate your personal TB and Geocoins, make them as “non-collectable”. For the ones you already have, the default is “Non collectable”. But it will say on the TB pages that you haven’t chosen what the collection policy is. Just FYI
Now, if you look at your profile, and click on “Trackables Inventory”, you will see the trackables that you currently have in possession. Beside each TB, you will see a link to “move to collection”. If you click on that link, it will move that TB to a special collection for you. That will also remove the TB from your TB list at the bottom of a cache page that you are logging. So, if you have a TB on your car, and don’t want to have to sift through a bunch of TB’s that you don’t drop in caches, this is the way to fix that. But, this is also why you don’t want to mark your TB’s “Collectable”. Because if it is, then someone else can move your TB to their collection and forget that they have it because it doesn’t show up in their inventory either.
The only reason you would mark any of your TB’s as “Collectable”, is if you give a coin to someone but you keep owner ship. Your friend keeps the TB as a “Collectable” but never wants to place it in another cache.
Also, the great thing about moving a TB to your collection, is that it can only be “discovered”. This keeps cachers from stealing your car!!
I think that covers just about all of it. I hope this helps, and let me know if you have any questions.
