Home Fires Burning

The Tenth Geocache in the Taliaferro County Historical Society’s Movies Made in Crawfordville Geocache Series was created by Joe Martin and placed online 12-5-2010. The GeoCache movie location is located in Golucke Park in Downtown Crawfordville. This Cache represents a made for TV movie, “Home Fires Burning”, that was filmed in Crawfordville in 1989. The date 1944, a tiny Georgia town, the story of newspaper man Jake Tibbetts (Barnard Hughes), who’s alienated almost everyone in his life — including his wife, grandson and even his closest friend — with his irritable ways. Jake’s son Henry (Bill Pullman) is fighting for his country in Europe, but even across oceans, the relationship between father and son is strained.

Many residents were in the cast. A number of sequences take place inside the building now housing the Crawfordville municipal complex on Broad Street. In the opening sequence a WWII bi-plane is seen flying over Taliaferro County. As the movie begins the residents of the town are surprised as the aircraft makes a low level pass directly down Broad Street.

Golucke Park is where the production cameras were located when the aircraft scene in “Home Fires Burning” was shot. The Park is named for a prominent Taliaferro County family that still maintains a home on Commerce Street. Mary Gordon Golucke was a 4th grade teacher at Alexandria Stevens Institute for many years. A movie theater was located on the site of the park. Some residents still recall walking to the movies downtown on Saturday afternoons. Today a small pavilion is located in the park. From this location one can visualize the opening scene of the movie. Zoommmmm. Or find a modern geocaching treasure.

The First to Find the “Home Fires Burning” Movie Mania Geocache was logged at 8:00 PM 12-5—2010 by the Flying Eagles from Woodville, GA. Here is what they had to say: Great hide. Thanks for another fun hide in the Movie series and also thanks for bringing us to Crawfordville while all the Christmas lights were lit up . You could even hear Christmas music playing from across the street at one of the nearby stores . Took a key chain, Thanks for the FTF and TFTC , Flying Eagles

Geocaching is a worldwide game of hiding and seeking treasure. The Taliaferro County Historical Society is creating Geocaches for each of the twelve Movies made in Taliaferro County. Ten are in place. Join the fun of Movie Mania. Get out and find a treasure!

Not interested in geocaching, get in the spirit for the Holidays! Visit Crawfordville for a stroll downtown and take in all the brightly decorated stores. Happy Holidays from the Taliaferro County Historical Society.

The eleventh Geocache in the Taliaferro County Historical Society’s Movie Mania Geocache Series was created by John Allen and placed online Sunday evening 1/9/2011. This one was really a quest to find since it started snowing in Crawfordville shortly after being activated online. Of course the Flying Eagles from Woodville, GA were not to be denied the honor to be “First to Find”, despite the hazardous weather conditions, they did it again. Here is what they say in their log “We got up Monday morning and found out neither one of us had to go to work , but it was still pouring down snow , and we were a little scared to drive this far for a cache . Tuesday we had to go to work , but when we got home , the roads were already freezing back , so we were still kind of scared to make the trip . Now here it is Wednesday , we get home from work , the roads are already freezing back again . We checked the cache page and no one had log this cache yet. We couldn’t take it any longer, as all you Geocachers understand this feeling. We jumped in the truck and drove about 40 miles round trip at 20 miles per hour. When we got to the cache location. the refrozen ice on top of the snow had gotten real hard by this time . This is a hint that will last only as long as the snow does. As we got about three feet from the cache location , I quit worrying about my footing quite as much in all the excitement of finding a new cache. There is an imprint of a 200 pound, six foot, four inch man , right in front of where the cache is.”

This cache is another Taliaferro County Historical Society Movie Mania cache done by Mr Allen. He is consistently picking old historical churches to hide the treasures. The cache is located near the United Methodist Church in Sandy Cross. The church was built in 1891. While not in use today the building is still representative of the many small community churches in the countryside.

The cache represents the made for TV movie, “Quest for Justice” starring Jane Seymour. It is the story of Hazel Brannon Smith, a Southern newspaper editor and publisher who risked the loss of everything she loved by publishing her perspective of intergration with a steadfast adherence to her editorial duties in the face of great pressure and opposition from segregationists. Ms Smith was, the first American woman awarded the Pulitzer Prize for editorial writing. At the time she was the editor of the Lexington Advertiser, a Mississippi newspaper that addressed in print the racism in the South. For her activism, Hazel is initially put out of business then, she is asked to produce the alternative newspaper the Mississippi Free Press. Mrs. Hazel Brannon Smith first printed the Mississippi Free Press on her printing press in Lexington, Mississippi. The paper’s audience was primarily African American; however, the Mississippi Free Press claimed it was for all Americans who believed in, “freedom of speech, worship, movement, and freedom from intimidation”.

The Taliaferro County Historical Society has created Geocaches for each of the twelve Movies made in Taliaferro County. Coupling the history of the movie with historical sites in the County has been great fun for the Historical Society members. Now you can join the Movie Mania Quest. Get out and find a Geocache treasure! Each of the Geocaches in the Movie Mania series contains a movie poster key chain. Collect them all.

Can you believe I finally made it to day 100 of the CoTC: Streak? It was definitely very difficult at times and I wouldn’t want to do it again. It all started and ended with caches placed by CSRA Cruisers! A couple of days ago I looked up which caches I found at the start of the streak. The caches were “How Do You Do That #4″, “Lights Out”, and “Drain Pipe”. I thought what better way to end the streak than to find a cache from the same CO that I started with. I managed to do that today with this one. To mark the occasion, I brought a friend along who has not been geocaching in years! Found with wildraynorris, pinbow & compgeek1221. TFTC! And I’m glad the 100 day caching streak is complete. And no, I don’t think I will be trying to make it to 150!.

I am honored that you started with my caches and then ended with one of my caches.

Congradulations to you!!!

Coward of the County & GORP

GeoCaches released in Taliaferro County

The eight and ninth geocaches in the Taliaferro County Historical Society’s Movies Mania Geocache Series were just released. The Coward of the County geocache was created by Charles Greene. The GORP geocache was created by Robert H Kendrick.

The movie Coward of the County was made in 1981. In Coward of the County, a teenage pacifist must deal with life at home during World War II. Tommy played by Fredric Lehne, made a deathbed promise to his father who went to prison, for killing a man in a fight, to refrain from striking anyone. Now Tommy must deal with his neighbors going off to war and worse yet the gang rape of his wife to be. Tommy’s Uncle is played by kenny Rogers.

The location of the Coward of the County geocache is neither historical or directly related to the movie. But, like Kenny Rogers at the time of the movie is a relative unknown location. This movie became a launching point for Kenny Rogers popularity at the time. Kenny plays Uncle Matthew, a preacher, who has his faults. As a person who admits to past mistakes, learns from them, and then passes on these lessons, this comes close to Mr Rogers real personality. This is a family movie about growing up with principles.. There is much to enjoy in the movie, the characters are well developed, and include the following Taliaferro County residents; Sam, Lois, Charles, Sandra, Jon, Mary Jane and marcus Greene, Joy Wood, Chad Brown, Kathleen Mitchell, George Jackson, Bill Specth, Robert Morris, James and Melanie Finney and Bill Fouche.

The movie GORP was made in 1979 and released in May of 1980. GORP is a relatively silly movie about about kids in summer camp. It is set in a Catskills style plush resort for wealthy Jewish kids… except it was all filmed in Alexandria Stevens State Park in Crawfordville, GA. A significant number of Taliaferro County residents had the opportunity to participate in the making of GORP the movie including; Vivian Harford, Carolyn Moore, Sam and Louis Greene, and Troy Taylor. Also from surrounding Wilkes counties Pete and Mary Ruth Chafin and Myra Chafin along with Billy Harper from Warrenton. The GORP geocache is located in Alexandria Stevens State Park. The creator of the GORP geocache was a lifeguard at the park in his youth and remembers 200 folks swimming in the lake on Sundays. NO swimming require to find this cache. It is easily accessible. But, hard to find.

The Taliaferro County Movie Mania Caches contain Key ID Tags depicting the movie poster. There are now nine Movie Mania Geocaches in Taliaferro County. Soon to be thirteen. A H Stevens Park also has other geocaches caches located around the park, including one that is a part of the Georgia Parks Geo-Challange. The Geo-Challange is one of the biggest treasure hunts in the state of Georgia.

Would you like to try your hand at geocaching, just go to www.geocaching.com.

Jennings Baptist Church is the location for the latest Taliaferro County Historical Society Movie Mania Geocache titled Neon Bible. The movie Neon Bible is a 1994 movie made in Crawfordville. The Neon Bible Geocache was created by John Allen and placed online on Sunday October 17, 2010 at 7:30 PM. One of the big rewards for Geocachers is being First to Find. Immediately after a new Geocache is posted the location is e-mailed and texted to Geocachers in the surrounding area. Mr Allen was in his living room at 8:00 PM when he noticed flashlights flickering around the Church. Within minutes there were two cars in the parking lot and four flashlights on the hunt for the Neon Bible Geocache.

Jennings Baptist Church is one of the oldest Baptist churches in Georgia still in operation today. The current church building was built on land donated in 1894 by the Hadaway family and started out with 45 members. Jennings Church was build on two acres of land that was purchased for the sum of $10. The men of the church donated the labor and built the church themselves. The Reverend L.R.L. Jennings, a Confederate Army veteran, was the first Pastor. The church pews were made in 1924. The Jennings church always lacked indoor toilet facilities. Cohen Wright, a member and Babe Reese, a local carpenter, built an outdoor “Privy” that is still used by passing motorists and the members today. Until recently, baptismal services were held across from the Church in Jennings Creek. The main structure of the church stands today. A magnificent steeple was added to the existing structure in 2000. Jennings Baptist Church is lit at night. Many people stop and take pictures of the building to capture the past and present beauty. The Church building has itself “starred” in a number of movies as a “picture perfect” country church”. The Church is still active today with 32 members.

Neon Bible, the movie, harkens back to a harsh time by reflecting on dark thoughts of a young boy as he contemplates his life during the Great Depression. The 1994 movie takes place while the boy, David, is traveling on a train, thinking and remembering. Flash back fragments of memory reflect Davids life. The audience is left to flesh out the meaning of David’s thoughts. This was one of the darkest of times for people and the movie provides a sense of how hard life was during the 1930’s. A number of Taliaferro County residents had the opportunity to be members of the cast including; John Allen, Sam and Louis Greene, and Myrtle Kendrick.

If you are interested in Geocaching, go to www.geocaching.com and search for the Neon Bible Geocache. Be sure to pick up a Neon Bible Key Chain to commemorate your visit. If you just want to go for a ride in the country, come on out to Jennings Church on Route 47 East of Crawfordville. Maybe you want to take some pictures of this picture perfect country church. In either case take some time to look at the grave markers in the little cemetery adjacent to the church. Some of the markers have outstanding engravings symbolizing the lives of those church members who are gone now.

As the big day comes closer and closer, I wanted to give all of you first crack at some items that I want to sell to get money for Christmas.

I want to upgrade my iPod Touch. Therefore I would like to offer my current iPod touch that I have for $200.00. It is a 32gig, 3rd generation itouch. Most all of you have seen me with it. I use it on a daily basis. There is nothing wrong with it, I just want to upgrade to the 4th generation. It comes with all of the original items that came with it. If you have any questions, please let me know.

The next item up for bids is my Garmin Nuvi 760. We have been using it for about 2 years now and we are wanting to upgrade to newer Garmin. There is nothing wrong with the GPS. I just replaced the battery so it will last a good time in or out of the woods. I am asking for $100 on this one.

If no one wants it, it’s off to that “e” place. But I would rather someone here have them.

Let me know if you are interested.

The Third Geocache in the Taliaferro County Historical Society’s Movies Made in Crawfordville Geocache Series was created by Charles Greene and placed online on 9-17-2010 at 4:59PM. The GeoCache movie location is a tribute to all those who have served in the Armed services. The Movie is Summer of My German Soldier. This Cache is located at the Taliaferro County American Legion and represents a made for TV movie that was filmed in Crawfordville in 1978. Summer of my German Soldier stars Kristy McNichol, as Patty Bergen a young girl in a very southern town with a World War II prisoner of war camp nearby. A young German soldier escapes the prison camp and Patty befriends him. Complicating matters, Patty is a teenager in a Jewish family living in the American South during World War II. Patty feels like an outcast even in her own family and is unable to understand why her father can’t seem to love her. After getting to know the German she ends up harboring him from his captors, and, in the way of many adolescents, falls in love with him.
The First to Find was logged at 8:10 PM by Flying Eagles from Woodville, GA. Here is what they had to say: “We got off work at 5:00 and drove home and decided to see if any new caches had been published today. To our surprise, there was a new one only about 14 miles from home and had been published only an hour or so. We jumped in the car and headed that way. Got to the cache location and searched around for a bit . We walked right by it twice. Very unique hide. Thanks for another fun hide in this area. Flying Eagles”.

The Second Geocache in the Taliaferro County Historical Society’s Movies Made in Crawfordville Geocache Series was created by Robert Harold Kendrick and placed online on 9-11-2010. Located on the grounds of the oldest Protestant Church in Taliaferro county this geocache highlights the movie Carolina Skeletons. The 1991 movie Carolina Skeletons features Louis Gossett Jr. as as American soldier returning to his hometown (Crawfordville, Tenn) after a long time away. Many years ago, his brother was executed for the rape and murder of two girls. Mr Gossett, an army commando, believes his brother was innocent and seeks to prove that. His “Search for the Truth” is resisted by some people in Crawfordville who will stop at nothing to hide the secrets of their past. A major portion of this movie was filmed right here in Crawfordville, GA. Mrs Myrtle Kendrick a local resident can be seen in one scene serving Louis Gossett coffee at the Bonner Cafe. Other Taliaferro county residents in the movie are Louise Greene, Bill Specht and, Dillard and Shirley Noggle.

Geocaching is a worldwide game of hiding and seeking treasure. A geocacher can place a geocache anywhere in the world, pinpoint its location using GPS technology and then share the geocache’s existence and location online. Anyone with a GPS unit can then try to locate the geocache. A GPS unit is an electronic device that can determine your approximate location (within around 6 – 20 feet) on the planet. Coordinates are normally given in Latitude and Longitude. You can use the device to navigate from your current location to another location. Some GPS devices have their own maps, built-in electronic compasses, and voice navigation. Are there rules for Geocaching? Yes. Basically; 1. If you take something from the cache, leave something of equal or greater value. 2. Write about your find in the cache logbook. 3. Log your experience online at www.geocaching.com. Each of the Taliaferro County Movie Caches contain Key ID Tags depicting the movie poster. Would you like to collect them all? Start now. To locate the Carolina Skeletons Geocache, just go to www.geocaching.com and type in the zip code 30631.
